RISE AND SHINE

From the get no
Ever have an off day? One which from dawn
forward never moves in the right direction?
Sometimes such a skewed start is beyond our
control. Yesterday I awoke with a migraine.
One so debilitating that I couldn't see straight.
Hence the day's kickoff was literally a kick in
the ass. And from then on the rest was spent
suffering its consequences. At times external
forces derail any positive intent. Be they rain,
bad news, or any cloud hanging above one's
ability to function properly. All of which in
theory seems to indicate that day in day out
the odds are against us.
Hide and freak
Obviously if that were the case most would
opt to cower under the bedcovers on a daily
basis. Instead we rise and do whatever we
can to shine. Confident that no matter what
goes wrong - somehow we will survive. Or
even better that in said process of usurping
negativity we'll be pleasantly surprised with
the outcome of our positive intent.  If you're
like me you don't want anybody to see you
down. Putting on a facade even in the worst
of circumstances. Yet it's amazing the power
of a smile. Somehow a big grin convinces
us that all is good. Or soon will be.
Sunrise, sunset
Yesterday a friend and I shared war stories.
Recounting our worst of times. You know -
those moments in life when one doubts they
can overcome their obstacles. Ultimately we
both found our ways out. And in said exiting
process found that inevitably good is the end
result of bad. Something to remember when
you're stuck in muck that drags you down.
Like my morning migraine - the worst in life
ultimately passes. Which may be each day
starts and ends in a glorious burst of beauty.
Offering a promising start and affirming end
to every day. Even the worst.

FREE AT LAST

Victims of circumstance
Eleven months ago I got a text from a friend
and former colleague. Asking about what I
was doing about the "suit" that I was named
in. Having not been served a summons I was
confused. Subsequent research showed that
yes - I was one of dozens of defendants in a
major lawsuit. All of us accused of playing
a role in the downfall of our former company.
The sale of which occurred six years prior.
Soon I was on the phone with a lawyer. Who
stated that while unfair and wrong said suit
had "legs". Thus whether right or wrong this
writer was screwed. It didn't look good.
Spin cycle
Suddenly my entire world was in a spin. The
only benefit being that for several days I was
so upset - I didn't eat. In theory liable for over
seven figures - both Frank and I worried that
we might lose everything. If not due to a final
judgement - but by the legal fees required to
defend our future. Soon I was reconnecting
with former colleagues, peers, and associates.
All also on that same list. Lamenting that it
was shockingly unfair. Meanwhile the legal
process started and then went on... and on...
and on. With a few random "wins" along the
way. Honestly, the future looked bleak.
Stormy whether
The resulting impact of the lawsuit was the
negative impact on both Frank and I. Every
day I dreaded looking at my in-box. If and
when the phone rang I worried it might be
even worse news. Then suddenly on another
Zoom call our lawyer shared that hope was
on the horizon. After proving the plaintiff's
wrong in discovery - they were now willing
to consider arbitration. Hope loomed bright.
Then yesterday it was settled. And due to a
corporate insurance policy still in effect - at
no cost to any of the wrongly charged. Thus
with one Zoom it was over and one. Poof!
Light at the end of the tunnel
I often talk about the harsh reality that we have
little control over life. Hence we must treasure
the here and now. This experience reinforced
just that. While the odds against being struck by
lightening or named in a wrongful lawsuit are
about the same. The fact is that fate can deal us
a blow at any time with capricious abandon. If
or when that happens, one's greatest challenge
is holding on to hope. Believing that the truth
will prevail. In end my legal battle affirmed that
justice will prevail. And thanks to the process
I'm older. Wiser. And completely.... exhausted.
Ready for whatever happens next. Good or bad.

ON again. OFF again.

Neither here nor there?
Change is hard. Transitioning from one place
to another challenging at best. Hence the state
of confusion many of us are experiencing post
being vaccinated against Covid 19. Honestly,
the sense of peace, safety, and security after
getting said shot has been amazing. Easing all
stress and angst over getting infected. Along
with - in theory - eliminating the need to wear
pesky masks. Subsequently we've adhered to
the rules - wearing masks if and when asked.
Yet feeling rather silly doing so. In that here
in Montana our governor eliminated all mask
restrictions eons ago. So nobody wears them.
Damned if you do or don't?
Thus almost everyone in Fergus County does
NOT wear a mask. Vaccinated or not. Making
anybody still wearing said protection part of
that minority. Hence during our "re-opening"
at the new store yesterday - Frank and I were
caught between two extremes. In theory we're
protected. Yet in reality, some experts suggest
we might still harbor the virus and thus infect
others. So our opting in or out could negatively
impact others. However that's not our dilemma.
Sadly wearing a mask has become a political
statement. One that in theory could negatively
impact our local sales.
A delicate balance
Thus depending on who was in our store we
spent much of yesterday with our masks on
or off. Depending on the customer. A wishy
washy stance that if I'm honest - bothers me
greatly. However as merchants we have to
honor our customer's wants and needs. Thus
for now we plan to continue our alternative
approach to public safety. Our challenge is
straddling today's political schism of two
extremes. A dilemma that impacts far more
than masks alone. Therefore we hope that
our on again off again approach shows that
we care for and respect all whom we serve.
